Advanced Technology Is Helping Skilled Nursing Operators, Assisted Living Facilities & Home Health Care Providers

August 31, 2022

Technology innovation is enabling skilled nursing and assisted living facilities and home care providers to improve state and federal regulatory compliance and, anticipate any future issues as a result of the changes, handle transitions and migrations that occur between each facility setting, including to and from home health facilities, improve risk management and safety, and provide better patient care.

AI and Health Care

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning-enabled software are helping skilled nursing and assisted facilities with risk management, including fall prevention, enhancing resident safety, and bolstering the programs that providers offer. Technology exists that delivers data and predictive analytics in real time about patient acuity, fall risks, and other factors. With this type of preventive care, a facility can reduce the risk of costly rehospitalizations, reimbursement penalties, or even litigation.

AI can also assist in the support of the “Hospital at Home Model,” which has rapidly expanded as a result of the pandemic. Patients want safer alternatives to hospitals and nursing homes. AI can assist in determining which patients are eligible for home care at the point of intake. Once patients are at home, AI will process data from remote patient monitoring devices to help predict patient deterioration and recommend proactive interventions to correct course on treatments and ultimately improve outcomes.

Improving Patient Care

Skilled nursing staff can quickly see how conditions have changed in the last half hour, overnight, or over the weekend by using technology that allows them to view the status of every facility, floor, wing, and resident—all in real time. This allows the healthcare team to identify the most vulnerable residents and make necessary staff changes, which is critical in today’s labor shortage environment.

Home health care software is available to assist in the management of patient care. Advanced scheduling technology, for example, allows providers to view multiple patient/caregiver schedules at once and filter based on discipline, level of care, patient care location, and more in order to better match employees to patients.
