What is ‘People Operations’?

August 23, 2022

Today’s labor shortage in many industries, including in the home health care sector, has employers looking to transform and strengthen their HR strategies to attract and retain employees. While traditional HR practices deal with legalities and policies, which are essential, today’s HR also focuses a lot of energy on helping people fit into an organization. Over the last few years, a strategic paradigm shift in HR has occurred, called People Operations, PeopleOps, or even POPS.

PeopleOps can fit around people. It’s a first-person approach to employment in which the business takes a holistic view of its employees’ progress, well-being, and results. It involves transitioning from a culture of compliance to autonomy and is about creating an environment that makes employees happy and proud to work for their company.

The approach prioritizes people operations for individuals and businesses to grow to their fullest potential. The term People Operations first came onto the scene in a book titled Work Rules, by Laszlo Bock, who developed the People Operations department at Google.

People Matter

PeopleOps managers and teams take on additional responsibilities integrating with every part of an organization by designing work around people. They should:

  • Work with management to keep track of workloads, production, and expectations, especially when interviewing and onboarding new employees
  • Develop the company culture and employee relationships in collaboration with Internal Communications
  • Create rewards and compensation to encourage employee initiative, participation, and dedication
  • Assist employees in transitioning into new positions or as part of a more significant business shift
  • Maintain engagement by monitoring working conditions, well-being, and turnover rates
  • Consult employees on strategic decisions and invite them to be a part of the conversation
  • Listen to and advocate for employees while also aligning their needs with the company’s overall mission

A PeopleOps manager or team is concerned with helping employees flourish and retaining talent. They promote employee development and happiness over time so that each employee becomes an invaluable contributor to the company.

In the end, it’s about empowering employees, which invites engagement and appreciation, creates a culture of inclusiveness, and establishes a stellar company reputation in the industry where people want to work. In the home health care industry, happy, committed, and rewarded employees also mean happy patients who are well cared for.
