The National Association for Home Care (NAHC) encourages all communities to celebrate National Home Care and Hospice Month, honoring the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapists and social workers who make a difference for the patients and families they serve. Additionally, Home Care Aide Week takes place November 14-20, a weeklong, nationwide celebration to recognize the individuals who have helped to shape the health care system.
“Home care and hospice nurses, therapists, aides, and other providers choose to use their lives to serve our country’s aged, disabled, and dying. This noble work deserves our recognition and praise and we celebrate November as home care and hospice month for that very reason,” said NAHC President William A. Dombi.
November is also a time to raise awareness about the importance and availability of home care and hospice services. Home health care is medical care appropriate for people suffering from chronic illness, recovering from acute injury or illness and needing skilled care to remain at home. Services include medication management, wound care, physical therapy, speech therapy and other skilled services provided by licensed individuals. Some patients qualify for additional services such as home health aides and medical social workers when necessary to support skilled services. Approximately 12 million people in the U.S. require some form of home health care and more than 33,000 home health care providers exist today. In 2018 alone, cites the NAHC, home care providers are set to have travelled about 8 billion miles to deliver the best health care in the world. In addition, home health aides are projected to be the third fastest-growing occupation in all industries, increasing 47% over the 10-year span from 2016-2026, according to the Labor Department.
Hospice care provides comfort, compassion, and end-of-life support to patients and their families in the comfort of their home. Patients are usually referred to hospice care when they are in the last phase of an illness so that they may live as fully and as comfortably as possible. The quality of life for the patient, but also family members and others who are caregivers, is the highest priority. There are over 4,000 hospice providers in the U.S. serving over 1.3 million patients, according to the NAHC.
